About SIFE

SIFE is a global non-profit organization active in more than 40 countries. SIFE is funded by financial contributions from corporations, entrepreneurs, foundations, government agencies and individuals. Working in partnership with business and higher education, SIFE establishes student teams on university campuses. These teams are led by faculty advisors and they are challenged to develop community outreach projects that reach SIFE's five educational topics:

    • Market Economics
    • Success Skills
    • Entrepreneurship
    • Financial Literacy
    • Business Ethics

SIFE team members leverage their personal educational experiences, the expertise of their faculty advisors, the support of their local business advisory boards, and the resources of their institutions to implement programs that create real economic opportunities for members of their communities. The effectiveness of their programs is judged at competition. Each national SIFE organization conducts a national competition, which is judged by leaders from its business community. At competition, SIFE teams present the results of their educational outreach projects and compete to determine which team was most successful at creating economic opportunity for others. SIFE National Champion teams advance to the top level of competition, the SIFE World Cup.

About UAS

The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) is situated among Alaska's Inside Passage and the
Mendenhall Glacier along the shores of Auk Lake in Juneau, Alaska with two sub-campuses located
in Ketchikan and Sitka. None of these cities are directly accessible by road, which has pushed UAS
to create a less traditional learning environment both in and out of the classroom.

Being located in the state's capital, students gain access to internships with governmental agencies as well as enjoying the rural benefits of working with the numerous Alaska Native villages that dot the region.
Juneau's 32,000 people make it the largest city in the region and the third largest in the State. For a
small town, Juneau has much to offer such as a professional theater organization, symphony, music
festivals, a ski resort, mainstream and alternative movie houses, great restaurants, shopping, hotels,
and coffee shops. Juneauites love the outdoors but are also a creative, socially active group of individuals.

About UAS SIFE

The UAS SIFE team was developed when students in marketing, management, and new business
venture classes gathered their passions together to make a difference at UAS and its surrounding
community in the spring of 2007. The team realized that so many community betterment efforts are made to
communities in the “lower 48” and similar efforts need to occur in Alaska.

This team has constructed four projects, each unique and pertinent to UAS, its student outreach mission, and the surrounding community. These teams are composed of both traditional students and working professional spread across the State of Alaska and coordinated by the internet.
